Best Essential Oils For Cold Sores
If you’re on mobile, you can scroll this table horizontally.
Melaleuca is known to be an effective oil used for strengthening the immune system and cleansing.
It’s a fine product, although it has already been chemically distilled, and still needs to be checked upon for skin sensation – it’s effective.
If used properly, there wouldn’t be any problems with it.
Lemon balm is actually being used for a plethora of reasons.
This oil can be ideally used for bloating, vomiting, menstrual cramps, and many more.
For people who have Alzheimer’s disease, then you may use this for aromatherapy. Also, this is also used to treat cold sores by applying it directly.
It’s an oil that’s popular for its uses, but of course, there’s always a downside to it. This one’s pretty simple, don’t drink it – it’s dangerous!
Lavender is a wonderful oil for treating almost anything, but it's also a fantastic oil to use against cold sores.
I don't particularly like the lavender scent, but it isn't that much of a big deal.
If you're like me who doesn't like the smell, just add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil to solve the scent problem and POOF!
Bergamot Essential Oil is a good way to treat fever blisters – and other things, too! You can use this oil as an antidepressant and stimulant, antibiotic and disinfectant, cicatrisant, and many more.
What I love about Bergamot is that it has a mild fragrance that’s tolerable for children. Also, it can heal wounds and oral infections effectively.
This oil functions as a bactericidal so it can basically be used as a treatment for any infection that is caused by bacteria.
You may use this for treating skin problems like cold sores. Additionally, it’s also effective for other wounds in the ears, neck, or face.
The best way to use rose essential oil is to use it as an ingredient on a DIY ointment.
Hyssop is primarily used for wounds and cuts. It has antiseptic properties that enables it to treat any infection on the skin when it’s being applied directly.
You can apply this to your cold sores directly because it's gentler than other essential oils - that being said it's great for those with sensitive skin!
If you don't want a direct application, you can mix hyssop to your tea of choice and drink as usual.
Either way, hyssop will soothe your skin, inhibit irritation or pain on affected areas, and even reduce the lifespan of the sores themselves.
It’s an astringent that allows your muscles to contract. It can be used for preventing bacterial infections due to its antifungal and antioxidant properties. You can also use this for removing dark spots and scars, making it a popular choice for the ladies.
This is also an excellent oil of choice for fighting off cold sores or fever blisters.
What Is Fever Blisters?
I oddly find it satisfying that some ailment’s names sounds cool. And Fever blister is one them. But its description in general isn’t that charming at all.
Fever Blisters is also called as Cold Sores – no, they’re no exactly what you think it is. It does not refer to having the usual cough and colds. I know it’s kind of obvious, and doesn’t really need pointing out, but I just feel the need to.
Just for solid proof, its way of transmitting is kind of different. It’s a virus that can be passed down from person to person by saliva.
So it means, it can either be directly shared – if you know what I mean – or by sharing the same glass.
But sometimes, you may already have it but it’s still inactive. It will only pop out when you’re stressed, weak, or generally have an unhealthy condition.
This is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). I guess it’s true, you have to get your partner checked before doing anything…kinky.
There’s another thing I want to differentiate, this is not the same as Shingles which is basically caused by the same herpes virus. They differ in symptoms and how they’re being transferred. We’ll talk more about it later.
Going back, I don’t particularly like this. At all. It’s because this usually appears on the face or lips. The reason why it would be best to avoid it is probably because it’s not really an attractive asset to flaunt.
Not a good way to impress your significant other, too.
But speaking of your special someone, which reminds me, you really have to get your partner checked. It’s possible for you get transmitted through oral-genital sex as your genital area could be affected.
I don’t know about your kinks, but having sexually transmitted diseases aren’t my thing.
Just for added information, I’d like to point out that this is under HSV-2 or Herpes simplex two. Although it widely covers your genital area, you may also get blisters on your face or lips – pure cruelty, indeed.
How Bad Is It?
Before answering the question, I’d like to share some news to you guys (I’m not really sure if this is considered as good or bad). But you only have to suffer the most on the
first outbreak – yay!
It’s something, right?
The first time you encounter cold sores, it usually lasts longer and feels worst. On the bright side, that’s about it. The next ones aren’t that much of a pest – although it still looks bad.
This is what happens after the first outburst, the virus will now reside in nerve passageways that’s located around the area of the primary outbreak.
As you might have guessed, since the virus is living on the same area, when it does happen again, it may be found on the same location.
Just for heads up, they’ll disappear after a couple of days, 2 weeks tops. To be precise, you’ll notice that they’ll crust after 4 days of appearing. But you’ll continue experiencing symptoms for about 7 to 14 days.
It’s not as bad as you think it would be as these will disappear with the given timeframe above. Unfortunately though, there are conditions on which they’ll reappear again.
The conditions may vary, though. But they usually appear after you’ve encountered and illness – I don’t get why they do that, maybe it’s because they want to remind us that our suffering hasn’t ended just yet.
Also, having poor nutrition also gives a chance for them to strike back, and too much sunlight exposure. There are cases that they may be triggered for some random reason, like getting your lip stretched for dental reasons.
Columbia University College of Dental Medicine reviewed that these fever blisters are common to people who have an overall weak immune system – you better start thinking of eating the right food.
Is There A Cure For Cold Sores?
Here’s an icebreaker: There’s no cure for cold sores, much to our dismay. But there are options wherein you can have faster recovery process. You may ask for your doctor’s prescription, or you could just get an over-the-counter medication.
These medications are able to do more than making the healing stage faster, but it can also alleviate pain, reduce the burning sensation, and of course, the itching.
However, there’s another way wherein you can fight against cold sores – and it’s my personal favorite, too! There are these essential oils that are effective for fever blisters.
At the later portion of this article, I’m going to show you the best essential oils to fight off cold sores. So for now, just sit back, and enjoy the show. Or the article. Whichever.
Preventing The Virus From Spreading/Happening
We never really welcomed fever blister with opens arms, they just somehow found a way pop out on our skins. They’re quite tricky, to be honest. But it doesn’t mean there’s no way of preventing them.
Here’s some ways:
Avoid Sun Exposure
I don’t want to be misleading, so I’ll make it clearer: Don’t expose yourself too much from the sun. Generally, just don’t make your lips dry.
A professor from Northwestern University Medical School, who goes by the name of Dr. Charles Zugerman, stated that the moment the lips become dry, it predictably starts to crack, when that happens, it’s now prone to be infected with bacteria.
Don’t Kiss, Just Ditch
These are known to be dangerously contagious, so please, while it’s still active, don’t kiss. However, it isn’t all that bad. Just make sure you take care of your body, and it will start to subside in a few days’ time.
Don’t Get Stressed-out
Studies have shown that there are over 50 million adults who have at least experienced blister fever once in their lives. But once it appears, it remains dormant for a lifetime.
The popularity of this contagious virus isn’t surprising – this comes second to the common cold – because American Psychological Association has done a survey back in 2007, and it showed that Americans are stressed more than ever.
The worst part is that, when they do appear, people tend to freak out since it damages their appearance, resulting to more stress. When this happens to you, as much as possible, just chill.
It’ll eventually go away.
Keep Your Utensils To Yourself
Apparently, sharing is not caring when you have cold sores. To avoid spreading the virus, never share your spoon, fork, glass, or anything that involves indirect sharing of saliva – it’s still contagious!
Girls, I know how much you love sharing shades of lipstick with your friends, but if you value your face, avoid exchanging cosmetics with someone who has cold sores.
And the virus can even be transmitted by using a towel to dry your face, it is that sensitive. So better watch out!
Do Use Hot Water
After you’re done using the utensils, immediately kill the bacteria by letting them sit in boiling hot water. You may keep on doing this process until you’re sure that your cold sores are already healed.
Use Hand Sanitizer
Unconsciously, we unknowingly touch our faces a number of times a day – it has become our habit. Hygienically speaking, it’s not that safe at all. But the case is even worse if you have cold cores.
Let’s put it into simple terms, let’s say you keep on touching your face while you’re on your PC, the moment you make a direct contact with the keyboard, you’re already promoting the spread of the virus as it is.
Every time you catch yourself touching your face, make sure to use hand sanitizer afterwards.
Oral Sex Is Off-limits
As bad as that sounds, you have to contain yourself from having oral sex. When you’re experiencing the condition, putting the genitals of your partner in your mouth doesn’t sound so sexy at all.
This may be the reason why your SO would be contaminated by cold sores in their genital area. Do your partner a favor, and explore other things for the time being.
Like playing UNO cards!
What Are Other Mouth Infections You Should Be Careful Of?
Identifying what kind of mouth infection you’re having is the first step on knowing how to treat it. Like what I’ve said earlier, cold sores are quite a common problem for Americans. But there are other contaminations that you need to be careful of.
They do have something in common though, if they do not disappear after 10 days, then it would be best for you to seek for a professional help.
In the meantime, here are three other infections:
In a way, they’re kind of the same as they can also develop on your lips. Commonly, you can find these growing on your tongue, inside the cheeks, gum, and throat. They can be either yellow or white in color with a touch of red for its border.
However, unlike fever blisters, it’s not contagious.
If you think that toothaches are terrible, then this goes beyond that scope! This happens when a nerve of your tooth gets infected.
You’ll experience an extremely severe toothache, and you’ll have to think twice before drinking any cold or hot beverages as you’ll be sensitive to them.
In some cases, it’s being accompanied with fever and inflamed lymph nodes.
If there’s an overgrowth of yeast, this tends to happen. You’ll notice that there are white spots appearing on your tongue. It’s also been recorded that you would have difficulty is swallowing.
Some people call this as “thrush”, this is described to be a fungal infection that commonly take place in the throat or mouth.
Cold Sores and Shingles: Knowing The Difference
Singles, or known as herpes zoster medically, usually affects people who are 60 years old and above. The older you get, the more prone you are to get shingles.
However, this is somewhat a common disease. Annually, there are around 1 million Americans who suffer from this disease.
Now, what does it do, exactly? There’s going to be small rashes on your body, and these are painful. It can be located on one side of your body, which is just over the strip of the ribs, and will look like crusting blisters.
It does not only limit to one place, you may find these growing out from different parts of your body as well. The cause of chickenpox, varicella-zoster virus, is the same cause of singles.
It’s an interesting find that if there’s someone who has active shingles, and had a contact with a person who has never tried chickenpox, the person in question gets chickenpox and not shingles.
Studies have shown that this disease can’t be transmitted from person to person.
Unfortunately, I can only say much. If you have other questions which you want to be answered by the professionals, then you may check out American Sexual Health Association Herpes Resource Center to learn more on these things.
