You don’t. Fleas are disgusting. And if I hurt any flea-lover out there, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. However, I don’t think there’s someone who loves pet parasites with six legs and they feed on the blood of their hosts. Are they the pets of Vampires? Well, only Edward Cullen knows.
They jump easily and they have a compressed shape that makes it easy for them to run through the hair of your innocent pet. Or in my case, my sweet little Labrador. They have this weird mindset that the hotter and damper, the better. If you’re living in a place where you can get a decent tan without intending to, there’s a high risk of your pet being infested with fleas.
By the way, the line that says, “Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are,” kind of applies to your dog in this situation. I’m referring to its furry dog pals that he often goes to the park with. Because fleas have this flea-law that tells them, “Oh, look. Another dog. Let’s make babies on his back.” Okay, maybe they don’t have a law. Or a government. But that’s how their natural instinct usually go.
Good news is that they don’t live very long, they’re weak. On the other hand, female fleas are able to make up to 2,000 eggs – in just 4 months!
That’s. Way. Too. Many. Eggs.
I’d be happy if they were chicken eggs, I’d have unlimited protein for a lifetime.
Apparently, adult fleas only mate after they’ve got a good serving of a large blood meal – they basically have sex after dinner. Living the good life, indeed.
Fleas are great in playing the game of hide-and-seek. So when a female flea lays her eggs, these eggs usually fall from their host and incubate to wherever they land.
That means…it could possibly land on your bed. Your new roommate will then hatch into a larvae after 10 short days – that is if you haven’t cleaned up your bedsheets, better do that more often.
They’re pretty strong for a larvae, they can survive up to 200 days in the environment. But they have their favorite spots to stay. They’re quite choosy, really. You’d find them chilling with their squad on your shag carpeting, floor cracks, furniture and bedding.
But they have their favorite spots to stay. They’re quite choosy, really. You’d find them chilling with their squad on your shag carpeting, floor cracks, furniture and bedding.
After they had their time of being a larvae, they’ll enter to this new evolution stage, and now they’re called a pupae.
They’re not as impressive during this phase, as they’re in a cocoon, all cuddled up. This may be last from days to months.
In this stage, they don’t eat – eating disorders? Anorexia? Puberty? I don’t know. It’s just how the phase goes. And finally, when temperature and humidity are right, they make their grand entrance as immature adults – HOORAY!
They still have to pass the final test to become a fully-pledged flea. And this is a tricky one for them – finding a host. Oh, by the way. They have a time limit, too. Which is about two weeks.
If they don’t find one, they simply rot away and die. They have failed their college entrance exam. For the honorary fleas who have now become mature adults, which is only 1% of them, they’re now free to suck the blood of their host for as long as they want – basically 4 months – and they die.
Overall, they live the go big or go home life, which is why they don’t live long. It doesn’t change the fact though that they can make our pets go bald – pets shouldn’t have to suffer!
Hence, the title of the article. I’m going to tell you on a little secret on how you can prevent fleas and get rid of them. I’m going to talk about it a while.
Before I begin talking on what’s the proper oil to use, I have some friendly reminders.
PET FRIENDLY REMINDERS: Your pets are more sensitive to essential oils than humans. It is better if you dilute the essential oil heavily, especially for smaller pets.
You can use 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil of your choice and be sure to dilute 80 to 90 percent prior to application. Moreover, you should not place any essential oil on the eye of your pets.
Cats are more sensitive to essential oil, so be more careful when dealing with them.
If you realize that your pet is uncomfortable with the scent of the oil, try spraying the scent on your body to quickly ease your pet to the scent of the essential oil. As a preventive measure, you should keep a clean home often and you should vacuum places around your house that is being frequented by your pet.
After vacuuming, it is important to remove the contents of the bag immediately, in order to avoid re-hatching of the eggs.
With that out of the way, here’s the list of the best oil to use:
Lemongrass essential oils have high citral and geraniol content, which is known to repel bugs such as mosquitoes, fleas, and ants. It is a natural bug repellant that has a mild smell and can be sprayed directly on the coat of your pet. In order to make your own flea spray, add about 5 drops of the lemongrass oil to water and apply the spray to your pet.
Cedar wood is another natural bug repellant. For maximum effectiveness against fleas, it is recommended to be mixed with citronella and lemongrass. You can try spraying diluted cedar wood essential oil on your linens and furniture to keep the pests away.
Frankincense oil has an antiseptic property that can help in eliminating bacteria and viruses from your home and clean indoor spaces. This essential oil has been commonly burned to help disinfect an area and is used as a natural deodorizer. It can be used with your essential oil diffuser to help reduce indoor pollution and deodorize and disinfect any room or surface in your home to avoid fleas.
Citronella has been known as a gentle, plant-based insect repellent and it is known to repel a dangerous type of mosquito called the Aedes aegypti, which is capable of spreading the dengue fever. Citronella essential oils are effective in preventing other pests such as fleas.
Thyme is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-pest that should be used minimally on pets. It is an effective bug repellent that needs to be diluted before applying the mixture on your pets.
Lavender essential oil can repel fleas and soothe the irritated skin that has been caused by flea bites. It can aid in the healing process and boost your pet’s immune system. Just like thyme essential oil, lavender should be minimally used on pets.
Pine essential oil have been shown to have natural insecticide properties. This essential oil has a sweet, woody fragrance with a somewhat balsamic undertone, which spreads a sweet smell as it evaporates. It should only be used externally. When using this oil as a pet repellant, the recommended dosage is 1 to 3 drops and should be used with an essential oil diffuser.Application Methods of Essential Oil Based Recipes to Relieve Fleas
Essential oil enhanced shampoo
The essential oil can be added to your pet’s shampoo. The recommended essential oil to be used for your essential oil enhanced shampoo is citronella and lemongrass. The ideal dosage is 1 drop for smaller pets and a larger dosage for large pets.
Essential oil Infused Brush
Another method that can be used to remove the fleas on your pet is by using essential oil infused brush and this method would not disturb the natural oil balance of your pet’s skin. This method involves a steel brush and placing a thick material like a single layer of towel or a folded sheet. You can push the material down the teeth of the steel brush with an inch above the base. Moreover, you will need to place a bowl of warm water and combine a couple of drops of cedar wood or pine oil and soak the prepared brush in this mixture before brushing your pet’s coat. You should rinse the brush thoroughly during the brushing period in a bowl of essential oil infused water. The essential oil infused brush treatment will disinfect the dog, condition the coat, and collect the parasites and eggs in the brush.
Essential oil Based Flea Deterrent Spray
You can create your own flea deterrent spray by combining water, vinegar, and a couple of drops of the recommended essential oil of your choice. You can place it in a spray bottle and spray it on your pet’s coat, pet’s beddings, and be sure to avoid putting the flea deterrent spray on your pet’s eyes.
DIY essential oil based flea collar
Commercially made flea collar is not often advisable to be used by your pets due to the high toxicity that they have. These toxins can be absorbed by your pets through their skin, which is why it is better if you use a homemade essential oil based flea collar that works in just a month. You can start the flea collar canvass with a soft material collar that should be soaked in a mixture of alcohol and 3 drops of the recommended essential oil of your choice. For the maximum effectiveness of the product, you should add in a couple of drops of garlic essential oil that has been diluted. The resulting mixture should be poured over the flea collar and wait for it to be fully absorbed. Once it is dry, carefully put it around the neck of your pet.
Fleas do not like the taste of garlic and if the fleas can taste garlic in the blood of your pets, the fleas would avoid feeding on the blood of your pets.
You can dissolve and place a garlic capsule on the food for your pets. You can add in a diluted garlic essential oil to the water of your pet. However, it is best to limit the garlic intake of smaller pets.
Fleas avoid the taste of apple cider vinegar and the fleas will avoid feeding on the blood of your pets if they can taste cider in the blood of your pets.
You can add in 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar for every 1 quart of water for your pet.
Flea bites can be infected and it is vital to clean the bites from fleas, so you should wash any bitten areas.
After bathing, apply no more than 1 drop of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil. On the other hand, you can dilute 3 drops of thyme in apple cider vinegar and apply it over the bitten area.
The best preventive measure and treatment for fleas is to clean your home. It is important to regularly vacuum and wash the beddings and linens used by your pets.
Since fleas fly off your pets, it is important to clean the areas where your pets would usually stay.
Another important point to remember is that when you are cleaning, be sure to remove the trash immediately to prevent the flea eggs from hatching and re-infesting your pets.
We love our pets as much as we love ourselves. They make our days brighter, heartbreaks easier, and pockets lighter – because they’re pretty expensive to maintain. But it’s all worth it!
Any of these oils will help you to prevent those vampire-wannabes out from your pet’s fur. I’m a dog owner, and I can honestly say, I feel like my dog’s invincible!
I definitely don’t want them on my bed. I mean, I know life gets lonely, but being partnered up with these pests, is just insulting.
I’m not that lonely.
Before I forget, here’s a video of a guy with his dog. He tests essential oils out on his charming Golden Retriever. You might learn a thing or two on how it works.
